Summer Heat Safety for the Unhoused: Tips and Local Cooling Resources

Recognizing National UV Safety Awareness Month

July is National UV Safety Awareness Month, a reminder of how important it is to protect yourself from harmful UV rays. For individuals who spend much of their day outdoors, it’s especially important to take steps to stay cool, hydrated, and out of direct sunlight whenever possible.

Heart, Love & Soul serves as a cooling center to provide relief from the heat, offering a place to cool down, access water, and rest indoors during dangerous weather conditions.

Tips for Staying Cool When You’re Outside

  • Find Shade: Trees, building overhangs, and shaded areas can help protect against sun exposure.

  • Dress Smart: Light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and a head covering like a hat or scarf can reduce sun exposure.

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink small amounts of water often. Dehydration can happen quickly in the heat.

  • Rest When Possible: Avoid exertion during peak sun hours between 11 AM – 4 PM.

  • Cool Down: Use a wet cloth on your neck, wrists, or face to help lower your body temperature.
